Diffusion Tensor imaging is a recent variation on the magnetic resonance imaging technique. It measures the restricted diffusion of water in tissue. The architecture of parallel bundles of brain axons can be observed. Water diffusion is constrained by fatty myelin sheaths surrounding the axons.
