Spiral galaxy Messier 106 (NGC 4258). M106 is 20-25 light years from Earth. The X-ray portion of the image is blue. The "ghostly arms" represent regions of gas that are being violently heated by shock waves.

NASA's Chandra is the most powerful and sophisticated X-ray Observatory to date. Chandra was deployed by Space Shttle Columbia in 1999.
